Creating a Supportive Work Environment: Franchise Owner’s Guide

One of the most critical aspects of running a successful franchise is creating a supportive work environment where team members feel valued and motivated to excel.

A supportive work environment has a positive impact on employees’ mental health and productivity. As a franchise owner, you are able to create the work environment of your choosing, so you may as well create one in which your team feels comfortable and productive.

Michael Hill, CEO and co-founder of Well Groomed Pets, spoke with 1851 Franchise to share invaluable insights on how franchise owners can achieve the feat of creating a supportive work environment as a franchise owner through strategic initiatives and effective communication.

Creating a Comfortable and Positive Working Environment

To make others comfortable in the environment, you need to make yourself comfortable first. So think of the kind of environment you work best in, and become familiar with your employees and team members. 

“Many franchise owners are first-time entrepreneurs,” said Hill. “When dealing with teams, we need to be comfortable transitioning between leader, teacher, coach and counselor.” 

Transparency is another key factor in effective leadership, as it helps build trust and a feeling of belonging.

“Be transparent with your team regarding the challenges you face and the success you are having,” said Hill. “Hiding behind spreadsheets is no way to lead.”

Transparency also lends itself to a feeling of inclusivity. Nobody wants to feel like they are left out of a big secret, and most people like to feel as though they are contributing something to the team effort. Shared efforts help you achieve those triumphs.

“Most people are inclined to help others,” Hill said. “Share a challenge and let your team be part of the solution. Nothing brings people together more than working on a common cause, and nothing is more empowering than winning.  Try giving your team simple but impactful challenges to solve together. Over time, you can broaden the projects.”

By working together towards common goals, employees forge stronger bonds and feel empowered, which contributes to a positive work culture.

Establishing Effective Communication

Effective communication is vital in the running of any business. And while nobody is interested in attending loads of meetings that could have been handled in an email, catching up as a team and having a quick and relevant discussion is incredibly important in building a supportive work environment. For Hill, this translates to a meeting once a week.

“We highlight one area where we’re doing well and another that needs improvement. It’s crucial to ask for ideas during these sessions to engage and empower the team,” he said. “Don’t focus on more than one or two things. Big agendas take too much time, cost too much money and severely dilute your message.”

Promoting Work-Life Balance

Promoting work-life balance and employee well-being is another crucial aspect of creating a supportive work environment. Hill suggested hosting initiatives or events where team members bond over shared tasks and light-hearted moments. These activities not only break the monotony of daily routines but also strengthen relationships and boost morale.

For example, Hill’s staff implemented “Yard Day,” where they take turns occasionally setting aside a morning to help a team member complete yard work. Although it isn’t strictly related to their job, the team enjoys working together, helping each other out and bonding over coffee and donuts.

“For fellow franchisees looking to strengthen their teams, I recommend adopting similar activities,” Hill said. “They’re investments in your people, creating a supportive culture that resonates through every level of the business. This approach promises to enhance team cohesion but can also significantly uplift your overall work environment, leading to better performance and increased job satisfaction.”

Be a Leader and Be Part of the Team

As a franchise owner, you are in charge. That means you get to determine the atmosphere and environment in which you and your team work. While you are the leader, it is also important to know and understand your team’s needs and to let them get to know you in return, which will inevitably lead to a better experience for you and everyone else.

“Be vulnerable and transparent with your teams,” Hill said. “Ask for help. Say thank you.”
