A gunman armed with an M4 assault rifle on Monday evening killed four people, including a New York City police officer, and wounded another in the attack that rattled a midtown Manhattan office building, authorities said.
The man, identified as Shane Devon Tamura of Nevada, died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound after carrying out the rampage near Park Avenue, according to authorities during a news conference at Weill Cornell Medical Center.
The response came after a “shots fired call” just before 6:30 p.m. local time, a spokesperson for the New York City Police Department’s (NYPD) office for the Deputy Commissioner of Public Information (DCPI) told Newsweek by phone. Police confirmed the police activity was near Park Avenue and East 52nd Street in New York City.
Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch confirmed on X that “the scene has been contained, and the lone shooter has been neutralized.” The conditions of the victims remain unknown as the investigation continues.
The Context
The shooting took place in one of Manhattan’s most prominent business districts, affecting a building that houses some of America’s largest financial institutions including Blackstone and the consulate general of Ireland.
The incident disrupted a critical area of New York’s financial sector and triggered widespread emergency protocols across the city.
What To Know
Tisch and Mayor Eric Adams detailed the timeline of the attack, which began at 6:28 p.m. when multiple 911 calls reported a shooter inside the building. Tamura arrived in a black BMW, stepped out carrying the assault rifle, and immediately shot a police officer before spraying the lobby with gunfire and proceeding to the 33rd floor, authorities said.
The attack targeted the offices of Rudin Management, where Tamura shot another victim before taking his own life, police said, adding that one woman who emerged from an elevator was allowed to pass by the gunman unharmed during the deadly assault.
Law enforcement officials found identification on Tamura, including a concealed- carry permit from Las Vegas, according to the commissioner.
The victims include Officer Didarul Islam, another male, and two women, including one woman who was found dead on the 33rd floor, Tisch said.
Islam, 36, was an immigrant from Bangladesh and a 3 1/2-year veteran of the NYPD, stationed at the 47th Precinct in the Bronx. “He was saving lives. He was protecting New Yorkers,” Adams said. “He embodies what this city is all about. He’s a true-blue New Yorker, not only in a uniform he wore.”
Tisch said the names of the other victims are being withheld until their families are notified.
The massive law enforcement response included personnel from the NYPD, U.S. Department of Homeland Security and other federal agencies. The building was placed under lockdown for several hours as authorities secured the scene and evacuated remaining occupants floor by floor.
Local television footage captured dramatic scenes of office workers evacuating with their hands raised above their heads, a standard safety protocol during active shootings.
